Days and Night of Diocletian 25th to the 27th of August
Roman legions lining the streets, people milling around in togas, fanfare music sounding from every corner of the palace, drum banging ominously on the streets… It’s a full on Roman life style during the Days and nights of Diocletian in Split.
This cultural manifestation, which has slowly become a highlight of the summers in split (alongside Split Summer Festival), has even more in store or you this summer. The Emperor Diocletian and his Empress Priska are at the center of the festivities. Usually played by well known Split figures, these two lead the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the processions.
In fact, Split is already a flurry of preparations for this manifestation. In the week leading up to the ceremonies, the town is slowly being turned into a Roman city. Including daily processions of Roman legions that walk the city streets in formation. Often with dignitaries trailing behind in horse led coaches. There are little Roman workshops springing all around the Old Town; pottery masters are showing off their skills, the blacksmith is making Roman coins, medallions and hooves, the girls are making flower crowns… These places are not just for show, the Hlebina Society is there to help teach you the ways of the Romans.
And what would any festivities in Dalmatia be without soccer? That is why on the very fist day of the Days and Nights of Diocletian there is a soccer match between the Romans and Delmats (Dalmatians). A spectacle that can’t be missed, it promise to answer the question of who actually invented soccer (here’s a hint: on of the teams playing the game).
All this and more await you during the Days and Nights of Diocletian! Come and see for yourself the living history of Split.
