SUDAMJA – DAY OF THE CITY OF SPLIT 2018
Sudamja – Split’s celebration of day of Saint Domnius, also known as The Day of Split.
The celebration of Saint Domnius is for centuries an old tradition for all generations. Saint Domnius (also known as Saint Dujam or Saint Duje, Saint Doimus, Saint Domnio or Saint Domninus) was a bishop of Salona who lived in the 3rd century, at the same time as Emperor Diocletian who executed him with seven other Christians. He is patron of the city of Split.
Although the festival last for days, the most important is the day 7 of May. The celebration starts early in the morning and you can see a lot going on that day.
There is a tradicional climbing to Cathedral of St. Domnius and putting the flag on the top. If you find yourself in the monumental court Vestibul you will hear Klapa – traditional a cappella singing. If you take a walk in the promenade – Riva you will find a lot of stands with a wooden souvenirs like wooden spoons and other kitchen supplies. But what you will not miss is to see children strolling with a wooden butterflies. Although butterflies make a lot of noise it also make a grown-ups to feel a bit nostalgia for the time when they where kids who force their parents to buy them one of those!
The city centar is crowded for the whole day but the most important event is playing TOMBOLA – popular game, originally from Italy, similar to bingo in which you can win some money.
