FESTIVAL MEDITERANSKOG FILMA SPLIT – FMFS 2018
The favorite event in the City of Split, this year 11th Mediterranean Film Festival Split, will take place at open-air cinema Bacvice and Zlatna Vrata Cinematheque from 7th–16th June 2018. Programme for this year includes many Croatian and regional premieres of movie titles that have already been noticed at the prestigious film festivals all over the world. During those days people who live in Split and their visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy in charming locations and watch carefully selected movies with subtitles in English.
Festival will be open with „Il Colore Nascosto Delle Cose“ by Silvio Soldini, sponsored by „Istituto Italiano di Cultura“. The competition programme, which is specifically focused on Italian cinematography this year, comprises as well the first musical depicting mafia „Amore e malavita“, a musical that brought five national awards to the directors’ duo Manetti, including the one for Best Motion Picture. Another one is „Sicilian Ghost Story“, who had premiered at Cannes Film festival.
The film by director Muayad Alayan „The Reports On Sarah And Saleem“, tells a story about forbidden love between an Israeli woman and Palestinian man, won two awards in Rotterdam. Syrian- Lebanese documentary film “Of Father And Sons” received recognition all over the world. Turkish „Kelebekler“ (Butterflies) by Tolga Karaçelik was also one of the winners of Sundance Film Festival.
As we witnessed from the last years, Spanish filmmakers are always welcomed at Bacvice and this year they are being represented by the film „Handia“, for which Jon Garrano and Aitor Arregi won ten Goya awards and Jury Award at San Sebastian. “Chien“, is the film by Samuel Benchetrit, while for fans of Greek New Wave Cinema festival has chosen “Oiktos” by Babis Makridis.
„Una mujer fantastica“, the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film and a French- Lebanese „L’insulte“ by Ziad Doueiri were part of the same competition for the Academy award.
Considering the previously announced programme outside competition, „Las Heredas“ by Marcello Martinessi stands out for winning three awards at the recent Berlinale. Mexican „Time Share“ won the Best Scripture Award at the recent Sundance, and also „The Guilty“ that won audience award at Sundance and Rotterdam.
Many quality features will be showed during the festival, but what is very important is to appreciate national cinema and local films to whom this festival gave numerous opportunities. People who work for the festival are very proud that every year more and more domestic filmmaker make film and screen their first short films under the „Jeske“ program. The manager of the festival, Alen Munitić said that he is hoping to see a long Croatian feature film in the following years.
Croatian film „Cyclists“ by Veljko Popović is opening short film competition in a prime time in front of hundreds of viewers. Followed by films of other Croatian directors Igor Bezinović, Judita Gamulin, Arsen Oremović, Ivan Ramljak, Igor Jelinović and others, while director Vlatka Vorkapić will be screening for the first time her feature „Pusti Dobre, pusti“.
